RCOE Mathematics Clinics

Appalachian State University stands out as the first university in the UNC System, and one of only a few nationwide, to integrate mathematics clinics into its teacher preparation program. Operating under the MSEC and overseen by a multidisciplinary team, the Reich College of Education (RCOE) Mathematics Clinics are led by Dr. Kelly Clark, Director of Mathematics Clinics, and Dr. Chrystal Dean, Director of the MSEC, who were integral in establishing the clinics.

For the Community

The RCOE Mathematics Clinics provide specialized instruction for students struggling with mathematics, including those with disabilities. Instruction is delivered one-on-one or in small groups at App State’s Boone and Hickory campuses and in partnering schools, serving North Carolina’s High Country (1st-8th grade) and Hickory (1st-5th grade). To enroll your students, contact rcoemathematicsclinic@appstate.edu or complete an elementary interest form (1st-5th graders) or the middle-grades interest form (6th-8th graders).

For App State Preservice Teachers

A key function of the RCOE Mathematics Clinics is to offer hands-on learning opportunities for App State preservice teachers in special education, elementary education, and middle grades programs. These practice-based experiences ensure that future educators are trained to provide individualized, data-driven instruction tailored to each student’s unique strengths and challenges.

“I feel like my confidence in teaching a student who’s struggling has definitely gone up.”

Hear What Others Say About The RCOE Mathematics Clinics

“I supported the clinic from behind the scenes and met with many of the current undergraduate tutors. Hearing their insights, so similar to ones I had as an undergrad, allowed me to witness the same joy, confidence, and sense of purpose that comes from working with real students. Being part of the clinic at both stages of my journey has reinforced how powerful authentic, supported teaching experiences can be for developing educators.”

— Graduate Student in Special Education, Undergraduate degree in Special Education (General Curriculum)

“Our partnership and collaboration with the ASU math clinic has been mutually beneficial in many ways. Primarily, these future educators gain meaningful hands-on experience while our students benefit from increased engagement, differentiated instruction, and a caring adult dedicated to their growth.”

— 1st Grade Special Education Teacher at a school-based clinic site

“This math clinic fills a vital gap in our community’s educational landscape. My daughter’s math scores have seen real, measurable gains, and both of my children have benefited from the individualized instruction and supportive learning environment. Every community deserves a resource like this; we’re fortunate to have it in ours.”
