Dr. Chrystal Dean

Dr. Chrystal Dean is a professor of mathematics education and the director of the Mathematics and Science Education Center (MSEC) in the Reich College of Education (RCOE). She received her B.S. in mathematics/secondary education and her M.A. in instructional technology from Appalachian State University. After teaching mathematics and science for four years to fulfill her North Carolina Teaching Fellows obligation, she earned her Ph.D. in mathematics education from Vanderbilt University.

Her research focuses on supporting students who struggle with mathematics, and she was an integral member of the team that established the mathematics clinics in the RCOE. The RCOE Mathematics Clinics provide effective instruction for struggling students and practice-based experiences for teacher education majors. 

In her role as MSEC Director, she has established the Enhancing Broader Impacts initiative to support STEM researchers in reaching a broader audience and fostering early interest in STEM fields by adding K-12 education outreach enhancements to STEM grants.
