About

Mission

The Mathematics and Science Education Center (MSEC) cultivates and sustains vibrant and innovative collaborations and scholarly investigations with partners in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education fields, leading to improved teaching and learning at P-20 levels, advocacy for broader participation, and lifelong learning for community members.

Goals

The overarching goal of the Mathematics and Science Education Center (MSEC) is to strengthen STEM education by fostering connections between Appalachian State University and public schools. We strive to achieve this reciprocal relationship by:

  • Offering a STEM resource lending library for AppState faculty, students, and regional educators
  • Delivering impactful STEM outreach for public school teachers, students, and families in partnership with university faculty and staff
  • Promoting scholarly collaborations that broaden the impact of STEM research

The needs of classroom instructors and current scholarly inquiries directly shape our activities. The MSEC offers workshops, summer programming, and other enriching activities that benefit regional learning and provide renewal credits to teachers.

Through grant submissions, research dissemination, and outreach events informed by cutting-edge research, the MSEC significantly enhances the reach of scholarly work at Appalachian State University. While our primary service area is Northwestern North Carolina, our programs engage teachers and participants from across the United States and internationally.
