Appalachian State University stands out as the first university in the UNC System, and one of only a few nationwide, to integrate a mathematics clinic into its teacher preparation program. Operating under the Mathematics and Science Education Center, the mathematics clinics are overseen by a multidisciplinary team. The Mathematics Clinics are led by Dr. Chrystal Dean, Director of the Mathematics and Science Education Center and Professor of Mathematics Education, and Dr. Kelly Clark, Director of the Mathematics Clinics and Assistant Professor of Special Education, who were both integral members of the team that established the clinic. The Reich College of Education Mathematics Clinic provides effective instruction for struggling students as well as practice-based experiences for teacher education majors.

App State Students
A key function of the Mathematics Clinic is to offer hands-on learning opportunities for App State teacher candidates from special education, elementary education, and middle grades programs. These candidates are trained to provide individualized, data-driven instruction that addresses the unique strengths and challenges of each student.
