Mathematics and Science Education Center

Lori Tyler is the Director of Summer Ventures in Science and Math and STEM Partnerships & Engagement in the Mathematics and Science Education Center at Appalachian State University. 

Lori was a North Carolina Teaching Fellow at Elon College, where she earned her bachelor's degree in mathematics. She also earned her M.A.Ed. in mathematics from Wake Forest University and Ed.S. in university leadership and higher education from App State. Additionally, she has completed coursework in school administration, biostatistics, epidemiology, and public health at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and doctoral coursework in educational leadership at App State and teaching and learning at Vanderbilt University. 

Her research interests include the impact of the Summer Ventures in Science and Mathematics program, promoting and sustaining the STEM Pipeline, and supporting student-led research.

Lori’s professional experience includes teaching mathematics in North Carolina at Orange High School, Cary High School, and South Mecklenburg High School. She has supervised student teachers, developed mentoring programs for novice teachers, written mathematics curriculum, coordinated many professional development seminars, and created multiple webinars for Summer Ventures.

She has also taught at the post-secondary level at several community colleges and Appalachian State University. She has coordinated the AppState Math Contest and currently co-coordinates the North Carolina Student Academy of Science (NCSAS-District 7), and the North Carolina Science and Engineering Fair (NCSEF-Region 7).

She is a member of the NCSAS Board and The Collaborative for Student-Led Research. She is also active in her community, serving in Rotary International-Boone Sunrise Rotary Club, Rotaract Club of Boone at Appalachian State University, and Delta Kappa Gamma. 

Lori has two "kitty kids": Cali and OK (Orange Kitty).
